"You
can make bad wine from good grapes
but you can't make good wine from bad grapes."
Never
a truer word said but not every year produces good grapes.
Almost every weather condition will have an effect on the
quality of the grapes, leading to good bad and indiffrent
vintages and this ulimately effects the prices.
The quality of the grapes also gives wine
the abality to improve over age, this is why a 1997 Bordeaux
should be drunk now and is average but a 1990 Bordeaux is
fantasic and can be drunk now or leave it a little longer
and it will continue to get better with age
My table below give a simplistic view of the
quality of years by giving a mark out of ten, obviously different
vinyards fair better than others with microclimates and wine
makers skill comining to the fore, so within the overall score
of say 7, one vinyard may produce an 8/10 and another 6/10.
